Holiday brings about alcohol ban--Thailand

As the Thai new year approaches, the Don't Drive Drunk Foundation has pushed for the government to completely ban alcohol sales during the Songkran holiday.

The foundation is urging supporters to send a letter or email to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, foundation secretary-general Taejing Siripanich to show that they agree with the idea.

There are two proposals that have been issued on what to do.

One proposal calls for a halt to alcohol sales from April 12 to 14 in every shop around the clock. The other, a softer option, is to allow licensed restaurants and entertainment venues to serve alcohol from 6pm to midnight during the three-day period.

Secretary-general would like to see an absolute ban, saying it would save more lives and reduce accidents as people go on holiday or return to their hometowns to celebrate the Thai traditional new year.

No matter what the final decision might be, the foundation is going to continue campaigning.

It's great to see that our country is not the only one affected by Drunk driving and want to take precautions to prevent it.
