Iranian Government Blacklists Literary Classics

Since 2006, the Iranian government has continuously censored classic literature and artwork from being produced and distributed in the country. Included on the list of banned books are “The Girl with the Pearl Earring”, and “The DaVinci Code”. Also prohibited are several books with lyrics from songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Black Sabbath, and Guns-N-Roses. Stores that sold these books were forced to destroy them or face foreclosure.
The crackdown also includes several published works by native Iranian authors, including Ebrahim Golestan, and all works by Sadegh Hedayat. This increase in censorship has since created an unnecessary strain on the country’s publishing industry, all thanks to culture minister Mohammed Hossein Saffar Harandi. The ban of literary classics is in intensification of the current regime’s attempt to censor literally every media outlet available to its citizens.
